Is Chiang Rai worth the visit? This was the question we asked ourselves as we planned our road trip in Northern Thailand. So we decided to go and check it out.
Our top recommendations in Chiang Rai:
A golden clock by day with the most unique architecture, located in the centre of a round about. It is at night that you get a whole new appreciation for this clock tower. At 7pm, 8pm and 9pm you are entertained by a music and light performance. Switching between all the colours of the rainbow while playing the sweetest tunes. This Chiang Rai beauty kept us entertained for the whole 15 minutes and we even came back for the next session. Be sure to put this on your list – watch our video to see what I’m so excited about 🙂
Wat Rong Khun White Temple
This must be the eeriest temple we have visited to date. White – meaning purity, softness and goodness – is such a contradictory name given to this pointy, scary temple with evil monstrous creatures displayed all over. It does have a deeper meaning however. Being a very popular tourist attraction, we did not enter due to the crowds. We were pretty much entertained from the outside – entrance fee is 50 Baht.
Boon Rawd Farm / Singha Farm
The Boon Rawd Farm was once the producer of barley for Singha Beer, but unfortunately no brewery here. You won’t be able to miss the gigantic Singha lion as you approach the farm. The girls enjoyed the space by running around the perfectly manicured lawn, climbing on the gigantic Singha and posing for some selfies. You can spend some good quality time taking a tour through the tea plantations and orchards. Venture through the park with a bicycle, tram or just take a stroll along the numerous walking trails.
Wat Huay Plakang 9 Tier Temple
What an amazing place!! This is the most gigantic Buddha statue I have ever seen!! The 9 tier Temple is just as breathtaking. Definitely worth a visit so make sure your camera is charged, because this place will keep you busy.
The Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is much smaller than the night market in Chiang Mai – a win for our family. The kids could walk around freely without the worry of getting lost amongst the crowds. The food court is the place to be for a social gathering. Tables surrounded with friends and families, indulging in the tasty local dishes. What a festive night this turned out to be!
TOP EATS – > Heaven Burger
The name says it all! This must be the tastiest burgers we ever had! Yes, I know it has been almost 6 months since last eating real western food, but these burgers are fresh, tasty, mouthwatering! We even went back the next day for more – definitely worth a try! See location.
When traveling we only need a clean place with good wifi and a comfortable bed, nothing fancy. We had a great stay at Chiang Rai Hotel and would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone traveling on a budget.
The answer to my question at the beginning of the post … Most Definitely Yes!! Chiang Rai is a town not to be missed!!

Die jongste dogtertjie lyk net soos jou ma. Ek het ‘n foto van jou ma in die laerskool. Ongelooflik.
